World's Tallest Lego Tower
posted August 29, 2007 - 11:02amIn mere days the CN Tower, Toronto's most famous tower will lose its status as the world's tallest freestanding structure to the 800-metre Burj Dubai skyscraper being built in the United Arab Emirates. So, what's a perpetually-overcompensating metropolis to do?
On August 20th, Torontonians attending the Canadian National Exhibition began to assemble what would become the tallest Lego tower. Using thousands of LEGO blocks, specialized engineers from Denmark led the building process, with the help of visitors to CNE. Even parents got involved in the LEGO fun. Henry says he didn't have LEGO when he was a kid and this helped him re-live his childhood.
"It's all about inspiring creativity and imagination," he said.
LEGO Canada's John Lotenfoe says the project is for adults just as much as the kids.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it's now the world's largest LEGO tower, beating that 94.3-foot erection in LEGOLAND in Carlsbad, California by one foot. Dozens of plus-shaped modules were stacked up with a cherry picker to complete the huge structure. There's no word on how long that tower will stand.
