Would you Give Away Your Olympic Gold Medal?

Would you Give Away Your Olympic Gold Medal?

A recent story of Jason Kidd's plans to give his Olympic gold medal away has been reported by various media outlets. A story like this makes me want to punch him in his face. It makes me want to go to the Dallas Mavericks' games so that I can boo him for being such a jerk. I understand that he is a pretty good point guard, but he is a horrible person. So what you already have an olympic medal from the 2000 Olympics. There are members of the USA Basketball staff, like Coach K, that are much more deserving of your unwanted gold medal than the owner of a Las Vegas casino's wife.

I'm glad that this blogger sliced and diced you up. You're one of the worst people to get the honor of saying that they are an American Olympic Athlete.

It's his to do whatever

Just like a paycheck for a regular "joe job", Jason Kidd earned his gold medal in exchange for his participation. Let's put it this way: when you get your paycheck, does anyone tell you you're a jerk or say that your boss is more deserving of your money because you buy cigarettes and beer with the money YOU earned? I know it's a stretch, given the mercenary mindset of the NBA and other professional sports these days, but some players actually play for the honor of representing their country. If the blogger wants to render an opinion, it is his or her right. But, to convey jealousy that a gold medal winner didn't give the medal to him or her is just plain silly. If the blogger really wants a gold medal that badly, he or she has every right to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team and participate in EARNING the gold medal. DO YOU HAVE THE WRITE STUFF?

Gold medal

People can do whatever they want with their medals, just as actors can do whatever they want with their Oscars (including selling them on eBay to avoid bankruptcy). Kidd did his part for the team, the team won the gold. I do think it odd that he's (supposedly) giving it to Steve Wynn... doesn't Wynn have enough 'gold' or similarly valuable items? My barber Diego gives me a great haircut, but I wouldn't give him my gold medal. Giving a gold medal to a war veteran, a sick child, etc. would make more sense to me. But then maybe I'm just an old sentimental softie. And if someone gave their gold medal to Donald Trump, that would cause me to break out in convulsions of projectile vomiting.
