Writing and blogging

Writing and blogging

One of the things I am a big fan of is blogging.  I get a great charge out of it.  It seems that there are a lot of writers who also feel the same way as there are writers these days who are putting their novels on blogs. nbsp; I am not sure if this is the smartest thing to do.  It seems that a number of publishers don't want to risk any kind of copyright issues by publishing novels that are already available for free on a blog.  So be careful.

When you blog, make sure you find something you like to write about.  If you can't write about it every day, no matter what you blog about it isn't going to go anywhere.  Also, I would stay away from blogging if you think that it will make you money.  There are a lot of places that promise a lot, but the fact is, you are very unlikely to make any money when blogging.

Writing a blog is a lot like keeping a diary.  This stands to reason, of course, because blogs were originally created to be online diaries.  You do it to kind of dump your brain into a medium where it gets shared with other people.  You do it because you love it and because you have something to say.  If you enter into it looking to make money or looking to get a huge publishing deal, you are likely going to be very disappointed.  You have to be realistic.

You hear the stories all the time about people who started a blog and now they make a fortune doing it.  These people probably make most of their  money by selling blogging kits and teaching modules and online classes that will supposedly teach you to make a fortune when blogging.  The people who make money when blogging do those celebrity obsessed websites that follow Britney around.  The other people who make money online sell porn.

I have also been told that the best way to promote my book is to start a blog.  Really?  I have a hard time understanding that.  What do I have to blog about when it comes to my book that I could write about every day? I think that some writers just like to talk about their writing a lot.

So, use blogs cautiously.  If you get a charge out of doing it, then keep doing it.  It can be very rewarding.  I love it.  However, if you think it will be something that makes you rich or hugely advances your career, then you may be barking up the wrong trees.

You Make A Good Point

It's hard to make money when talking about yourself unless you are a celebrity. However, blogging your book is becoming very popular. I interviewed David Wellington a while back and he talks about that.
