Writing tips: try create mood: a luxury hotel lobby
posted August 11, 2008 - 10:37amWords are text, not images, but you want to create images in the reader's mind, by providing atmosphere. The best way to try and do this, is to avoid mentioning the particular place, person or situation, and only describe it.
Tinnnngggg! She quickly replaced the small silver bell next to the sweet-smelling, blushing roses on the lavishly varnished counter. She was shocked at the sharp sound the bell had produced.
While waiting to be attended to, she glanced around. The interior was a combination of dark greens, reds and browns. The curtains on the large, high windows were draped in soft folds, only lightly caught at either end by shiny, wide, green tiebacks. She jumped when the desk clerk appeared beside her. She hadn't heard his steps on the thick carpet.
The mood or atmosphere I tried to create:
At the moment, the hotel is not busy.
Even though it isn't busy, the desk clerk should still be there.
The woman does not realise that the desk clerk really should be there and is not angry or impatient that he isn't.
She is nervous.
