Writing -- Use Gender Neutral English

Writing -- Use Gender Neutral English

Whenever possible, use gender-neutral words and expressions to prevent offending any of your readers.

For example, instead of "Chairman," you can try "Chair," "Moderator," or "Facilitator."

But if the the gender of the "Chair" is obvious from the context, then you can use "Chairman" or "Chairwoman" as appropriate.< p>

Here are some other suggestions (inspired by Microsoft Style Guide):

OLD USAGE: Man. Mankind.

TRY: Humanity. People. Humankind.

----------------------------------------------

OLD USAGE: "He mans the boat."

TRY: "He operates the boat."

----------------------------------------------

OLD USAGE: "The candidate was manhandled on the campaign trail."

TRY: "The candidate was roughed up on the campaign trail."

----------------------------------------------

OLD USAGE: Salesman.

TRY: Sales Representative. Sales Person.

----------------------------------------------

OLD USAGE: Man-made.

TRY: Synthetic. Manufactured.

----------------------------------------------

OLD USAGE: Manpower.

TRY: Workforce. Staff. Personnel.

----------------------------------------------

OLD USAGE: Man-hour.

TRY: Labor-hour.

----------------------------------------------

OLD USAGE: ... to a man

TRY:...without exception

OLD USAGE: Manhunt.

TRY: Hunt for the fugitive.

Ditto! Long Live Open Source, UBUNTU and NeoOffice!

Very funny! Thanks. And I totally agree with you. I have 3 machines in my office -- a Windows, a Mac and an (Linux) Ubuntu. And with my apologies to Mac, may I admit that I love my Ubuntu machine even more than my MacBook? It's a super OS with a zillion features, top-notch graphics and automatic free updates. Zero virus. Zero spyware. And totally FREE. BTW, I recommend NEO-OFFICE and not OpenOffice for a Mac since OpenOffice does have its copy-and-paste issues both with Safari and Firefox. NeoOffice on the other hand works like a dream on a Mac. And of course, it's FREE too :-)) Long Live Open Source!!! P.S. I saw the Beta demo of Ubuntu 7.1 that will be officially released next month (or in November, not sure) and it is just A-W-E-S-O-M-E ! Talking about visual splendor and animation taken to the Nth degree... I'm wondering what Mac will do to counter that?

Old Usage

Old Usage: Windows Try: Linux Old Usage: Internet Explorer Try: Firefox Old Usage: Micro$oft Office Try: Open Office--it's free! But, then again, Micro$oft is such an easy target. _______________________________________________________ "Treason doth never prosper, what's the reason? Wussing Out to Microsoft Style?

I understand if you want to 'be totally unoffensive to readers=etc,' but I'm not trying to make people like me! "I jus` wanna drink beer an` shoot stuff!" and so do most of the women I meet! What do You Think? Join Xomba to Tell Us! (if you think you're smart enough)
