Writing – Which writers have more job opportunities?

When it comes to a full-time writing career with benefits and good pay nothing beats technical writing. I've been a Senior Technical Writer for Fortune 500 corporations for the last 10 years and I have no idea why I haven't tried technical writer much earlier.

Nothing comes close to technical writing in terms of job availability, especially in high-tech urban areas like Boston (MA), Portland (Oregon), Washington DC, Durham-Raleigh (NC), Austin (TX), Seattle (WA), San Diego (CA), etc.

Here is a quick proof: I searched the Craigslist's Washington DC job listings today for the phrases below in “All Jobs” category. The results speak for themselves.

NOTE: Although there seems to be slightly more opportunities for “web writers,” most of those jobs (in contrast to technical writing positions) are short-term project-based free-lancing opportunities with no benefits.

Web Writer – 38 opportunities.

Technical Writer – 36 opportunities.

Proposal Writer – 16 opportunities.

Copy Writer – 14 opportunities.

Journalist – 9 opportunities.

PR Writer – 5 opportunities.

Poet – 4 opportunities.

Blog Writer – 2 opportunities.

Novelist – 0 opportunities.

Fiction Writer – 0 opportunities.

Non-Fiction Writer – 0 opportunities.

Screenplay Writer – 0 opportunities.
