X Games 14 -- Moto X Step Up Finals -- Day 2

Following the BMX Big Air on day 2 of X Games 14 was the Moto X Step Up Finals. Although not necessarily the most exciting of events at X Games, it never disappoints.

Four out of the five riders had four stroke bikes, capable of getting better traction going into the jump. The only rider with a two stroke was Mike Mason, who was called in last minute as a replacement and did not really have time to get the bike of his choosing.

The competition of Step Up involves jumping a dirt bike over a very high pole, without knocking it off, and riding away from the landing. You are given two chances per height and the pole gets increasingly higher. All five riders cleared the first two jumps, 26 and 28 ft with no problems. It took Brian Deegan two tries to clear the 30 ft jump.

The 32 ft jump held problems for the riders as the first three men (Clowers, Deegan, Mason) failed both attempts, although Ronnie Renner and Ricky Carmichael cleared it no problem. Ricky Carmichael then cleared the 33 ft jump, but Renner could not follow suit. Had he not knocked over the bar, he still would have failed because he jumped too far sideways, landed in the dirt, and did not ride away. To show he was ok, he then jumped up on the dirt, made a motion of slapping a girl's ass, proceeded to rip a pole out of the ground, and jokingly throw it at Carmichael.
