Xomba Buddies & Exchanging Comments & Email

Xomba Buddies & Exchanging Comments & Email

4
points

I write a lot, post a lot, and, then occasionally, get a request where someone wants to be my buddy.

I'm, probably, a little old fashioned here, but, I've always thought if you were a buddy of someone, there was interaction between you and someone else. Even, if you didn't see each other much, or, at all, you, at least wrote.

I do not get why I get requests from people wanting to be my buddy, and then when I want to write to them, which I always do before ever giving an ok to be my buddy, they're not accepting any email.

I don't need buddies I can't communicate with, and I can't imagine how you could be a buddy if you never communicate.

I'm hoping some comments might arrive which could explain this buddy-thing without communications.

Explained, or, not, I don't, and will never add a buddy I can not communicate with. No email, no buddy.

No pressing!

I think, people don't like to be pressed. In real life too, you cannot communicate and give your adress and tel.number to everybody! You have to respect the privacy: everybody likes to be free to choose.

So, why do the buddy-thing at all?

Why not just remain a member and not ask to be a buddy? That way you can be as private as possible, and not give out anything.

It would seem to me that you are raising to the level of wanting connection when you and I request "buddy-status."

If you are leery of making contact then don't make such a request. It would be silly to.

Anyway, for me, I'm sticking to my rule -- No Email, No Buddy.
I think it's good sense.

Because...

I like to read what some people are writing and I don't like to read others. I can look what someone has written, read, give points:-) or not, let comments. How many users has Xomba? :-)

josephehoward's picture

Your Buddies should be the ones you read....

and the ones you don't read, well, they should not be your buddies.

How many users does Xomba have? Who knows? I have five buddies on Xomba and we communicate, You, see, making a buddy-request is like opening a channel to communicate, and when the connection is made the communication begins.

If you wish not to communicate with someone, why ask for the buddy in the first place?

I just denied a buddy request because they do not wish to communicate. I don't need buddies just to have a list of people for others to see. I need buddies who will share ideas with me and me with them.

I, absolutely, can't even begin to imagine how anyone could possibly even make a buddy-request without knowing the ground rule for buddies, Internet, or otherwise, is two-way communication.

Maybe you might be able to enlighten me on your perception of buddies, and how the idea works without ever making contact?

I'm really at a loss on how it works without contact...

No,

I don't read only the buddies, as you see. However... I think you must ask Nick: I'm too new (or too old) to answer you.

The Future Of Buddies

The buddy system is going to get a slight overhaul.

Your buddies will be listed on your profile page by small picture and name.

You'll also be able to leave comments on each others profiles as well.

We've got other ideas for buddies as well. We're trying to lay some ground work down first though.

The basic concept for buddies is to allow you to keep up with your friends and favorite authors.

My vision is to have people sign up for Xomba that will just follow you in everything you write. Not necessarily personal friends, but fans as well.

Hope this helps.

Send me an example

Show me what you mean by can't communicate with them.

Do you mean through private message service or the contact field where you can email them from a form?

There are two ways.

Lots of times...

A lot of times, you get a buddy request, and you decide maybe hey, I will check out their profile, read a couple articles, and maybe then decide weather or not to accept the request.

Maybe you don't see much checking them out that way, so you decide to shoot them a message. But, they have their messaging set to reject attempts to send them an email.

SO, you are sitting there, wondering how in the heck you could even be a "buddy" in the pure sense of the word to someone who won't/can't communicate with you. It would be pointless.

Yet, even I have done this. Well, not entirely. I do gladly receive messages and emails. But, I have excepted buddies without screening or being able to contact them.

The first 10 people I had sign up for Xomba under me, I immediately added them to my buddy list, and sent them a message offering assistance to get them started writing. ONLY ONE acknowledged my attempt to be helpful. Nearly NONE have written much of anything. I admit, the current mail/messaging system here on Xomba is cumbersome, and pretty much makes me not want to write other users.

It is a lot easier to get in, write something and get out.

Recently I have tried to message other users in hopes of garnering some feedback/opinions to some of my articles.

Mostly, it appears to be hit and miss, but on rare occasions it is worth it because you end up finding a new friend. :)

buddies

its going to be pretty useful that way! if i have fifty buddies and all fifty of them get to know that i have posted a byte (i do feel i want to know what les, jdubhub, dr. smith etc are writing at the moment), all the better for me! hopefully buddies wont be informed of blurbs posting too, mailboxes will get slightly overworked :-)

On Buddies

I'll have to admit, I do find it a little strange when someone I've never interacted with sends be a buddy request. I did accept one, no problem.

I wouldn't think of walking up to someone on the street I'd never met, and ask them to be my buddy. They'd probably try very hard to avoid eye contact with me :)

Someone...

... has sent me a message as I was really just few minutes online. It was an instinctively reaction for me to not accept the message. I was occuped to understand how xomba is working!

josephehoward's picture

and all the better reasons to keep your email open...

I personally do not use instant-messaging, but that's a personal choice, as, most people do.

And, Antonella, brings up a point, which I think actually furthers the point of keeping your email open.

Instant-messaging is not email, and like Antonella states, she was busy doing something else and thus made no reply.

Keeping the email-channel of communications open, you can read what someone wanted to tell you when you have time.

When I send an email I never expect an instant answer, and, me, well, I've actually responded on things, several weeks later.

Email allows breathing.

And like Yoko Ono communicated to John Lennon (via a piece of paper) the first time they met, "BREATHE!"

Buddies

I add mostly people whose posts I enjoyed reading. I also added several new folks (newer than me) who had messaged me asking questions about things like where to find their AdSense code, clear up confusion about a blurb and a byte, etc. because they seemed to care about doing things right and I figured I could check back and see what they were writing. I also automatically add anyone I referred to see what they will do.
