Xomba.com and ToxicShock.tv's Top 10 Zombie Movies Plus George Romero Interview

Zombie movies. They have been scaring and entertaining us for decades. With origins in Voodoo culture, the modern Zombie movie features corpses that have been brought back to life to wreak havoc upon the living. To make things clear there is one strict rule we adhered to when making this list: the film must feature a person dying then returning to a semi-coherent, semi-human state. Unfortunately great movies like 28 Days Later do not qualify because the victims in the movie are suffering from a rabies like disease and do not actually die and return to a somewhat living state. So here is the Xomba.com and www.ToxicShock.tv Top 10 Zombie Movies of All Time.

10) Pet Semetary - Mary Lambert

Plot: A family moves to the country side and finds that they live not too far from ancient Indian burial ground that brings the dead back to life.

Cast: Dale Midkiff, Fred Gwynne and Fred Gwynne

Mini-review: Though not immediately thought of when discussing Zombie movies, the Stephen King based Pet Semetary surely meets the criteria by featuring corpses that come back from the dead. This movie scared the pants off of us as children and is still disturbing to watch today.

9) Re-Animator - Stuart Gordon

Plot: A dedicated student at a medical college and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue when an odd new student arrives on campus.

Cast: Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Abbott and Barbara Crampton

Mini-review: This is an extremely entertaining zombie movie based upon the works of the original horror novelist, H.P. Lovecraft.

8) Zombi 2 - Lucio Fulci

Plot: A reporter follows a woman looking for her father to the Caribbean when they stumble upon an island filled with the living dead.

Cast: Tisa Farrow, Ian McCulloch

Mini-review: This movie was meant to be the spiritual sequel to George Romero's Dawn of the Dead (which was released as Zombi in Europe). Fulci does a fantastic job with intense gore and great looking Zombies. Plus a Zombie fights a shark.

7) Shaun of the Dead - Edgar Wright

Plot: A man decides to turn his moribund life around by winning back his ex-girlfriend, reconciling his relationship with his mother, and dealing with an entire community that has returned from the dead to eat the living.

Cast: Simon Pegg, Kate Ashfield and Nick Frost

Mini-review: This is a fantastic zombie comedy with an awesome cast. A must see for Zombie movie fans and British comedy fans alike.

6) The Return of the Living Dead - Dan O'Bannon

Plot: When a bumbling pair of employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to re-animate as they go on a rampage through Louisville, Kentucky seeking their favorite food, brains.

Cast: Clu Gulager, James Karen and Don Calfa

Mini-review: Certainly not the greatest zombie film, but definitely worthy of the top 10 list. It did mark the beginning of Zombies chanting "Brains..." as they approached their victims. Fan of the ghoul, fan of the gore...This one's for you.

5) Day of the Dead (1985)- George Romero

Plot: A small group of military officers and scientists dwell in an underground bunker as the world above is overrun by zombies.

Cast: Lori Cardille, Terry Alexander and Joseph Pilato.

Mini-review: Although not one of my favorite of the Romero zombie films, it still deserves a mention. Great special effects by Gregory Nicotero and Tom Savini make for an exciting new look at the zombie film genre.

4) Dawn of the Dead (2004 Remake) - Zack Snyder

Plot: A nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman, and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.

Cast: Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames and Jake Weber

Mini-review: Everyone was definitely skeptical going to the theater to watch the remake of George Romero's classic, but this movie definitely payed off. Staying semi-true to the original, but with a different spin on the zombies.

3) Dead Alive - Peter Jackson

Plot: A young man's mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey. She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors.

Cast: Timothy Balme, Diana Penalver and Elizabeth Moody.

Mini-review: This is one of our favorite horror films, and a very close third for best zombie film. This movie was absolutely hilarious, filled with many memorable scenes and enough gore to keep the horror fans happy.

2) Night of the Living Dead (1968)- George Romero

Plot: The dead come back to life and eat the living in this low budget, black and white film. Several people barricade themselves inside a rural house in an attempt to survive the night. Outside are hordes of relentless, shambling zombies who can only be killed by a blow to the head.

Cast: Duane Jones, Judith O'Dea and Karl Hardman.

Mini-review: This is the Zombie movie that started it all, fine acting and brilliant directing by the master of Zombies, George Romero. They're coming to get you Barbara!

1) Dawn of the Dead (1978) - George Romero

Plot: Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter, and his television-executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.

Cast: David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger and Gaylen Ross.

Mini-review: George Romero is the grand father of the modern Zombie movie and "Dawn of the Dead" was the greatest Zombie he has ever made. The storyline was intriguing, and the characters were believable. This was our unanimous choice for best Zombie movie of all time.

So that's our Top 10. Not too shabby if I must say so myself. And as an extra bonus, www.ToxicShock.tv brings us their interview with Zombie film legend George A. Romero discussing his most recent movie, Diary of the Dead.

Send More Paramedics....

My favorite line in Return of the Living Dead was "Send more paramedics" uttered by one of the zombies over the ambulance's radio after they made a meal of the first group of rescue workers that were sent into the area. This one was darkly, darkly funny!
