Xomba Top 5's | Top 5 Nerds
posted June 12, 2008 - 2:00amTime for another round of the Xomba Top 5's. Today topic is Top 5 Nerds. These can be either fictional or real life nerds and I highly encourage you to make your list funny. Here is my list:
5. The Nerds From Revenge of the Nerds
These guys were awesome. Not only did they bring down the cruel jocks but they did it by playing an awesome Devo-esque song.
4. "Weird Al" Yankovic
The king of the song parody is, in his heart, just a really big nerd. Whether he is wearing a giant fat suit or starring in his feature film "UHF", Weird Al has been entertaining us for decades. His opus to nerds everywhere is here in his song "White and Nerdy".
3. Toby Radloff
Toby is best known for doing TV spots for MTV in the late 80s and for his character in the film "American Splendor". Toby is, as he describes himself, a genuine nerd. He is a fully self realized nerd and is not embarrassed to flaunt it. The best thing about him is that he is just a normal guy from Cleveland. Here is him talking about some of his favorite nerd foods.
2. Billy Mitchell
Billy Mitchell is the king of classic video games. He has a perfect score in Pac-man and is one of the best in the world at Donkey Kong. His story was covered quite thoroughly in the film "King of Kong" which pitted himself against an upstart Donkey Kong player from Oregon. Even though Billy can be quite arrogant at times, he is the best know video game player in the world and of course he has his trade mark haircut. Here is Billy talking about his Pac-man record.
1. The 501st
The 501st Legion or Vader's Fist is THE organization for Star Wars costumers. These are the people you will find at events dressed up in Stormtrooper or other Star Wars related costumes. These people are not just participating in a hobby, they are very serious about what they do. They can be seen marching at Star Wars Weekend parades at Disney World, comic shop events or even at birthday parties. Their biggest event was marching at the Rose Bowl parade in 2007 to mark the 30th anniversary of Star Wars. Here is a clip from the parade.

Al is a pretty good pool player.
Al and I played pool [8-ball] for several hours in Sioux Falls, SD, once many years ago. I was there for a science meeting; Al was on the road doing a few nights shows, staying at the same hotel. I could not sleep one night so went to the billiards room and I played pool, practicing my shooting. Al came in really late, after his show, with a bunch of his crew, and they started relaxing. I was alone at my pool table and Al came over introduced himself, and asked if I wanted to play against someone? We played for several hours, until I had to crash for my meeting's conclusion the next day. Al beat me more rounds than I won -- by at least 2-1. But he is a bright guy; a vivacious character. Fun, too.
