Ice cream mogul Irvine Robbins, 90, who co-founded the Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream company, died this week at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California. The company's website says that although their advertising slogan promotes 31 flavors of ice cream, they've actually created over 1,000 ice cream flavors.

Cashing in a $6,000 life insurance policy, Robbins used the proceeds to open his first ice cream parlor in December 1945 in Glendale, CA. By the late 1940s, he and his brother-in-law, Burton Baskin, who owned an ice cream parlor in nearby Pasadena, partnered to create Baskin-Robbins.
