The forgotten children

A lot of times in the news you hear praises of how this or that celebrity has adopted a child from a third world country and I ask myself why? There are so many children right here in our own country that need a family and desperately want one. The forgotten children, the foster kids.
You see I am an adoptive parent. My son was adopted from the Foster Care system. He was 5 at the time. However, he was removed from his "home" and placed in a Foster Home at the age of 3. He was being neglected and I suspect physically abuse. When we met our son 6 years ago, he wouldn't make eye contact, would only say what he thought we wanted to hear, and what pained me the most; he would show no emotions... he would never cry. He and I were in therapy for a long time.He has come a long way. Althought he's still stuck in the "Edipus syndrome", and he does not behave his age, still has his occasional tantrum. He no longer smiles when he should be crying, however he won't speak to me and of course no one else of what happended when he was younger. You might wonder or even think that he does not remember, but he does. As a psychologist I know he is not ready to deal with the pain of those formative years and when he does I'l be there for him.
The State of Florida does not give you much help in this area. They don't have qualified therapists to deal with children that were in the system and have been adopted by families who have no idea how to deal with this type of child. In the I meantime I ENJOY the good and try to overlook his shortcomings. I feel fortunate and blessed that he is in my life. He is smart, loving and knows, at such a young age what to say to mommy to get his way. Yes I am fortunate after all I never thought I would have the opportunity to be a mother. Would I adopt another child from the system? In a heartbeat... only a boy though. But my son wants no competition (his words) so I guess he will be the only one and that's alright with me.
