“The Art of War” is the oldest military classic known to Chinese literature. It was written more than 2,300 years ago, so there are different opinions regarding the author – individual or collective. It is possible that this is just a compendium of teachings (a lineage of military leaders that put their collective wisdom into written form), or the author could possibly be a singularly imaginative individual who had considerable practical experience in war (one of the unknown strategists of the Warring States much later than 500 B.C.).
