Understanding the National Environmental Policy Act

points

On July 23, 1971, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled against the Atomic Energy Coalition, citing a failure on the part of the agency to comply with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) standards in the application of regulations governing Baltimore Gas and Electric Company’s Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant (NRC, 2006). As a result, the project was halted for over one year.

A Morning at the Y

Every second morning at about a quarter past seven I coast into a parking spot on the eastern side of Springfield's Town Square. Providing that I move the little Nissan by eight o’clock, the parking is free. I exit the square via Temple Street, walking past the medical supply store, then the barber shop. Some days I’ll cross the street so that I can admire the Aubuchon hardware store’s window display.

A Closer Look at Wal-Mart

I arrived at the Keene Wal-Mart at approximately 2:00 pm on a Saturday. Edging my way slowly into the parking lot, it was clear to me that finding a spot to park my vehicle was going to be a chore in and of itself. As far as the eye could see, autos threatened to smother the asphalt expanse. Swarms of desperate drivers nervously patrolled each tightly-packed aisle in search of that ever-elusive vacant parking slot.
