The U.S. Supreme Court is poised to make a landmark ruling this week when it considers the case of District of Columbia v. Heller.

Heller a libertarian lawyer has spent five years and a lot of his own money bringing a challenge to the restrictions on gun ownership in the District of Columbia. Washington D.C. has the toughest gun laws in the nation prohibiting the ownership of handguns and requiring that rifles and shotguns be stored in unusable condition. It is argued by pro-gun groups such as the NRA that such restrictions on gun ownership are the reason that Washington D.C. has some of the highest violent crime rates in the nation. D.C. politicians blame lax gun laws in neighboring states for their crime problems.
