Buying and Using Apples
Ohio apples begin to ripen in July and different kinds produce until the end of October. The first crops are soft apples, used for sauce.
August apples are a little harder, and September apples are firmer, still. These are the good pie apples. They may be cooked up to a sauce, but will have lumps to mash out. They are also great for eating whole. Some apples with red skins, will make red sauce, if boiled whole (skins on)and then mashed.
