Yankees, Joe Torre Beat Indians; Survive to Play Another Day
posted October 7, 2007 - 11:20pmYankee manager Joe Torre doesn't have to look through the help wanted ads just yet. On the day that Yankee owner George Steinbrenner said that he probably wouldn't bring Torre back if the Yanks didn't rally to win their current playoff series with the Cleveland Indians, the team won its first game of the series, an 8-4 victory at Yankee Stadium.
The highlights:
* Cleveland went out to a 3-0 lead by the third inning
* Yankees starter Roger Clemens left the game in the third inning because of a suspected aggravation to an injury in his hamstrings
* Fortunately, rookie Yankee reliever Phil Hughes picked up the slack by hurling 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief
* That other Yankee rookie pitcher, Joba Chamberlain, recovered from his Friday night Nightmare of the Bugs in Cleveland to pitch two solid innings of relief
* Trot Nixon, formerly with the Red Sox, pulled a Bill Buckner play when he overran a single by Robinson Cano with the bases loading, allowing all three runners on base to score
* Johnny Damon went 3 for 4, including a three-run homer that put the Yankees ahead
So there will indeed be a game four, tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium at 7:37pm.
