You called your dog WHAT!?

You called your dog WHAT!?

We are all very careful (usually) to be careful that we name our children names that will not embarrass them later.

Though there will always be exceptions such as the poor guy I heard of who was called Chrispin Brown.

I am thinking its about time we took a little more care when naming our pets also.

If your a regular to Xomba you are probably aware that my brothers old cat was called B'stard. The cat was a bit of a character. I asked me brother if he had any regrets about B'stard when we were talking about the article and he said only one - I should never have called him B'stard.

He says, you have to imagine it, you have a cat who spends 90% of its time appearing to be lost, you can not stand and your front door or wander around the neighborhood shouting the "ooooh B'stard, come here B'stard, comeon comeon...etc..", as you are likely to get yourself beaten up to within an inch of your life in some areas.

I smiled at one of the comments I received about this story regarding another cat called Ugly, funny name but potentially the same problem.

A friend of mine owns a dog called Dixie. Her name gets shortened to Dix a lot, but never outside, you can not shout "Dix" across a busy dog park - people are going to think you are strange.

There lesson here, is be careful what you call your pet.

My dad, retired farmer, until now, has always owned more than one dog. He had collies for rounding his sheep and a gun dog or two typically. He said to me;

"always give your pet a short name ESPECIALLY if you own more than one pet" - he preferred single syllable names that have short vowel sounds.

Dogs particularly a great at learning many words and sounds, but when you have 3 dogs and you need them all back quick, 3 short names is very clear for them to understand, especially if your dogs are a 100 yards away.

Imagine a trip to the dog park, you see an issue ahead, a dog is troubling the other dogs and you decide you want to avoid the confrontation that's likely to occur... do you want to be shouting:

"Marmaduke Fredrick the Thiiiiiiiird", Mr Snuggley-Wuggley, ...etc"?

NO!, I bet you don't. You want to be able to react quick, have the dogs react quick and be out of the way as quickly as possible.

So, were I guess its OK to give your dog a really long name, its probably best to keep that name and his "Sunday name" and the rest of the time, just call him Fred or something.

pet names

Hi Lee1973 I wonder if a dog or a cats name can influence it. I suspect so in a subtle way. I am glad to here your cat is healthy now. I get your point about his name, it could so easily be misinterpreted. Maybe you could have a nickname for him - or maybe do what I do and rattle the food bag!.. Thanks for your comment! josephehoward - i think he is probably right too, he usually is... sigh... Thanks for your comment :-)

Keep pet names short. Why?

I believe your dad is correct. I've read several times that pets only hear the first-syllable in any name. ________________ It does matter what you believe, but, what you believe does not matter if you do not act upon your beliefs. you can not vote on the truth --Pope John Paul II, 1995

Too Funny

I have a Black Cat. never thought about it when I named him, however I named him Killer Negra because he was tiny and black. I wanted him to have a name that would give him courage and he was such a cute little black fluff ball I added the last part to it after much cohersion from the locals who insisted the name was perfect for what appeared to be a kitten trapped in a full grown body. That cat was tiny but is had a rather sudden unexpected growth spurt which can only be explained by the amount of love and attention he gets. To tell the truth he was so sickly as a kitten he shouldn't have even lived. He is rather large and healthy now (as healthy as a cat with asthma gets), and he loves to go out at night. I refuse to call his full name anymore. I don't want anyone getting the wrong idea. After all, when translated his name means Black Killer. He is little black kitty kitty that kills any tiny thing that moves. You should have seen him when he was tiny. If he wanted to play in the middle of the night he would jump on your face with his claws out. Not cool. Scared me half out of my wits and hurt too. I am so glad he grew out of that. Still his name makes me want to be careful when and where I use it. I have never purposely offended anyone. I won't say I haven't offended anyone. I have Asperger's. I offend people all the time without meaning too. I never did fit into a social category anywhere accept my very own. Pet Names

Unfortunately,in my neighborhood it's not that unusual for people to stand in their doorways screaming expletives but it rarely has anything to do with their pets. I wish I were kidding. Nice article

When I was young we had dogs in our neighbourhood named Kalia (meaning Black), Bhalua (meaning hairy) or some such in the colloquial language. Now Pet names have all gone global too and so many are named Rocky, Lucky, Casper or Beaver! I loved the image at the end! Here Is My Xomba Page Buy Video Games Online My profile

Thanks for that jdubhub

I am sure it was mad enough yelling Whiskey everywhere you went! funny story, thanks for that. I think "Bob" is a great name - "Bob the Border Collie" My own dog is probably 50% Border Collie and 50% Labrador - all the brains of the Collie, yet all the slack-ass-ly-ness of the Labrador - an interesting mix. I was watching a dog show and when the presenter announced a border collie - he said "owners have to be careful to be more intelligent than their dogs" ... fun and true. Thanks for your comment.

I did not realize

that you were in Thailand. I love Thai food and I am sure I would prefer your weather to that which is in Canada. Green is a neat name. I have really enjoyed reading what people call their pets today.

Here in Thailand they have

Here in Thailand they have what to us seems a strange relationship with names: they have nicknames like Bear and Blue and Grape. That's for the humans but extends to animals. One of our dogs was called Green. He wasn't. But he responded to the Thai name so I stuck with it as didn't sound so daft in Thai. We suspect he got eaten in our absence! Green Thai curry anyone? But I can't say I have fun naming animals... our cat has remained Little Boy to distinguish him from his sister, Little Girl. She has fled to make more kittens so that Little Boy can gorge on geckos all by himself. Join Xomba Here
