Your President...My President...

Your President...My President...

Your president...

  • is stupid, talks like a redneck and makes up his own words, and is inept as a leader.
  • stole two elections - one from Al Gore and one from John Kerry.
  • thinks that God talks to him, and wants a theocracy.
is a cowboy/frat boy who only wants things done his way.
  • cut taxes for the rich, spent our surplus, and has created record deficits.
  • is lining his pockets with money from big oil companies like Halliburton.
  • wants to put a stop to stem cell research.
  • doesn't care about the environment, and is causing its destruction and global warming.
  • doesn't care about minority rights and is a racist.
  • wants your retirement in the hands of greedy corporate CEO's and stockholders on Wall Street.
  • didn't react properly or quickly enough on 9-11.
  • has destroyed our image in the eyes of the global community.
  • dropped the ball on finding Bin Laden because he was to preoccupied with invading Iraq.
  • lied about Iraq so that he could get revenge against Saddam Hussein for plotting to kill his father.
  • has taken away our civil liberties and violated our rights by signing the Patriot Act into law.
  • is illegally spying on Americans with his domestic wiretapping program.
  • isn't doing enough to protect us from terrorism.
  • purposely leaks information that will hurt his political enemies.
  • and his administration are too secretive and should allow more congressional oversight.
  • is a terrorist and wants to build a global empire.
tortures prisoners and constantly violates international law and the Geneva Conventions.
  • blew our chances for a peaceful solution with North Korea.
unilaterally and illegally waged war on Iraq.

My president...

  • has a degree from Yale and Harvard, is creative with our english vocabulary, and has helped this country recover from our nation's greatest tragedy, an economic recession, and a war against fascism.
  • won two elections, the second one by over 3% and a few million votes.
  • publicly professes his faith in God and encourages people of all faiths to do so and support their religious communities.
  • has continually tried to work with Congress and the U.N. despite all of their failures.
  • has lowered everyone's taxes, helped grow our economy, and has reduced deficits in the last few years, which had increased partly because of our needed military spending.
  • wants to increase exploration in our own country and become less dependent on foreign oil.
  • is the first president to provide federal funding for stem cell research.
  • understands objectives of environmentalists and doesn't buy into global warming theories.
  • has appointed more minorities to prominent positions than any other president.
  • wants citizens to control their own retirement funds (social security) and not greedy politicians.
  • took charge on 9-11 and immediately transformed his presidency from having a strong domestic agenda to a strong foreign policy.
  • knows many nations envy us and want to destroy us simply for our stance on freedom, and for being the lone superpower.
  • has disrupted a majority of Al-Qaeda networks and has taken out most of their leaders.
  • used information given to him by intelligence communities worldwide to fulfill U.N. resolutions.
  • has proposed laws, which were passed by congress, to help protect us from the people who want to kill us.
  • intercepts phone calls made to terrorists communicating from outside our country.
  • tries to implement programs to catch terrorists but is constantly being undermined by liberal judges, partisan congressman, and by treasonous leakers in government and in the media.
  • has the authority, as granted by the Constitution, to declassify information as he sees fit.
  • has the power, as granted by the Constitution, to withhold information that can be harmful to our national security.
  • is fighting Islamic fascism and would prefer that other nations and their people be free.
  • understands we are fighting an unconventional enemy and war, and believes that terrorists should not be afforded rights not guaranteed to them in the Geneva Conventions.
  • is trying to deal with North Korea through coalition peace talks after failed diplomacy during the 1990's.
  • had congressional authority to fulfill a U.N. resolution and take a tyrannical dictator out of power in Iraq.

I realize there are some issues that have not been mentioned. I was just trying to show some good examples of arguments from each side of the aisle. People are going to disagree with one side or the other, or a little bit of both. Whatever points you agree on depends on your knowledge of the subject at hand. The important thing is to try to figure out which is more reasonable or rational, but I know that just depends on your individual beliefs. Which perspective is right will only be determined in your own little mind.

Well, john, I don't know

Well, john, I don't know where to start. Let me first say that being objective wasn't the point of my article. So you can call it "spin" if you like, but most of what I wrote has been said by politicians on both sides of the aisle. I'm not trying to spin facts, I'm demonstrating the two styles of the opposing arguments. Now, from what I've read, your idea of "objective truth" is not very accurate. I know it's hard to get a decent, objective view of our politicians while living in Washington, so I do feel a small amount of sympathy for you. Your pessimism is astonishing. But let's get to your arguments. I'll assume your "serious economists" have all taken math classes. If a "rich" person makes ten times more than a "poor" person, then they will naturally pay more in taxes if the rates are the same. (We know the rates are actually higher for the "rich" and most "poor" people don't really PAY many taxes, especially if they have children.) Now if the tax rates are decreased by ANY percentage across the board, then these same "rich" people will of course, save more of their own money. It's very simple math. I'm surprised you would bring up such nonsense like the "tax cuts for the rich" argument. I'm not sure if you knew this, but the Middle East has almost always been a region "in chaos." Terrorists have also been training there for many years, long before George Bush ever considered running for president. And for the record, the United States has never been loved by all the world. I'm not exactly sure where this strange mentality came from that everyone loves us and wants to coexist peacefully with our country. As far as international law and the Geneva Conventions go, these people we are fighting do not fall under Geneva protections. If you'd like to review who does, be my guest and read the Conventions. Military and CIA operatives do actually agree that some interrogation methods we use (such as waterboarding) indeed work, and have worked on terror suspects. They just recently released such evidence. Now, you can choose to "spin" that any way you like. I'm just glad they didn't have a chance to kill anybody in another attack. I'm surprised a person living in our nation's capital doesn't understand the necessity of these techniques. "Nuff said."

A spirited thread - but a shallow premise

Great to see such a lively exchange from an interesting initial posting (except for the minor deviations into ad hominum comments). Publius - your essay usefully reminded all of us that there are always two sides to an issue. Unfortunately, your essay also has the huge weakness of much of the main stream media -- you treat statements and views from either side as equally valid, as if there is no such thing as objective truth. In this way, you treat "spin" as reality. Which it is not. However, this administrations track record and intentions are quite clear. They came in with a clear ideology, an intent to pursue partisan advantage out of every situation so as to form a lasting majority, and to strengthen the presidency beyond the checks and balances system. In every realm, they have favored ideological purity and fealty over competence, analysis, and data. In doing so, they have created the poisonous atmosphere in our politics, and problems that will take decades to fix. Tax cuts and profiligate spending? There is not a single serious economist in the country who disputes that the impact is to favor the rich, hurt the poor, and create huge long term financial problems from the deficit. The simple math is that 99% of us are borrowing $400 B a year (deficit) in order to give it to the richest 1% in tax cuts. Iraq? Regardless of the original rationale, the war is a lethal combination of arrogance, ignorance, and incompetence. It didnt need to be that way, but the decision to staff the aftermath with ideology rather than experience (an objective reality shown in every review of the war) resulted in years of stupid, avoidable mistakes. (Brownie is NOT an aberration - he is the norm.) The result? US standing in the world is the worse in history, the terrorists have a new training and recruiting ground, and the region is in chaos. Constitution? international rule of law? moral fiber? How did we find ourselves with a president who pleads for the right to torture and run secret prisons, ignores our own constitutional system of checks and balances, and flouts the Geneva convention? And for what? No experienced military leader, military lawyer, or CIA operations actually supports the use of torture - because it doesnt work. they know that - and have known it for decades. Nuff said. We can toss around all the 'spin" in the world, but reality eventually must be faced. We will be cleaning up this mess for decades. citizen john

offensive flag cleared

Something in this post or the comments was flagged as offensive by a user. I have reviewed the entirety of the discussion and aside from name-calling I see nothing offensive here. So I have cleared the tag. Please continue the discussion, but if possible at least refrain from insulting each other. We do not wish to foster an environment of mud-slinging and name-calling instead I think we wish to foster an open and uncensored arena for discussion which this thread illustrates quite nicely. Carry on. :) Poised Guru Xomba Moderator

What you say is "new and

What you say is "new and different?" I've been hearing the exact same thing for a few years now. What new angles are you bringing to the conversation? Quotes?

not republican, but American

That is my point. I am a card carrying member of the Buchanan pitchfork brigade if you must know. I am neither Republican nor Democrat. Just an American who knows his country was attacked and is now at war. Hows that for free thinking patriotism. My ideaology would not have elected to go to war and I believe Bush felt the same. Shit happens though and you need to stay flexible enough to go where you might not have originaly wanted or ever dreamed to go. Most people had never heard of Pearl Harbor when they realized that life as they knew it would forever change because of it. AND THAT EVENT SET IN MOTION OF WHAT WAS TO BECOME THE GREATEST POWER IN THE HISTORY OUR PLANET. I am not a fan of the two party system either but I'll take it any day over what the sheiks do in their countries.

anthony b

Boys, boys, you are so wise!

And apparently psychic! I'm not a Democrat and haven't voted as one, well, ever. I was never a huge Gore fan and thought George McGovern was humorous at best. Democrats are weak. Almost as weak as the Republicans. But I'll leave you to squabble over your two party system. Your Republican talking points are far worse regurgitated crap than I've come up with yet. Yes yes, I know, it's all the Democrats fault and if we're not with you and you're attacking the president blah, war time this and that, and why do the blue states hate America so much? Glad you've got all that figured out. Try not to forget now that there are people out there who approach things from new and different angles - often for the sake of nothing more than that. It's called the Great American Experiment. Go on and call me a malcontent, but at least I've got the soul and the spine of a true patriot. I'd wager good money that the founding fathers are rolling in their graves at this country's current so-called leadership. They'd have tarred and feathered the whole treacherous lot by now. God! My kingdom for some more good men in this land! P.S. Jesus is pissed. He told me.

Lets be frank, you are a sore Gore loser / sour grapes

No, it's I who thank you ogmern wulfsail. You wear your sour grapes on your blue state sleeve. First I'm glad you felt you did'nt need to prove me wrong and then wrote a short novel trying to do just that line by line of what I wrote. I see I have gotten in your head good but I assure you it was not my intention. Lets be frank. You are a typical McGovern / Gore democrat who is still crying foul over your loss in 2000. It's not war crimes which bother you but the commander in cheif himself. Let me tell you the difference between us sir. I will support MY President and especialy in war time and I will not cry that I did'nt vote for him or that an election was fraudulent when you know very well how our system and electoral college works. I will not say that Bush wanted this war, not me. I accept the fact that our elected leaders make decisions on our behalf and only wished Clinton would have made a few relevent ones to fighting the defining struggle of the 21st century. You need to get your nose out of the philosophy books and to stop quoting Obama of all people. If you did then you'd know this war is most necessary and this IS your war. President Bush knows how to take the fight to the enemy and has the courage to be bold, bypassing the status Quo that we sit and wait and everything goes away. Especialy in that region. We have to be there and will be for the next 100 years. And of course your gas prices have much to do with it. Lets not be naive. $10 a gallon is not so much more than many countries are already paying. Where will our economy go with Iran calling the shots and setting the prices. You will most likely see the closest thing to a depression. We could'nt afford to keep the lights on. Democracy and free markets are the first reason though as freedom breeds peace and Bush is giving this region a big shot at this. Iran being able to smell us is anything but creepy. I find it reassuring they can. Jack Daniels, Bud, Red hot Chili Peppers and moms apple pie. You better believe they smell us and it makes them %^$# their pants. To quote Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now " I love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like victory ". Don't cry over war crimes Wulfsail, we are the best at monitering our people. Don't nit pick because Gore and Kerry lost. Back your President and he just might surprize you. Take a break from Philosophy and you may be able to " smell the victory ".

Well, I would have to say

Well, I would have to say that at first, I thought you were going to make some intelligent comments. Then I quickly realized how truly ignorant your comments were. You need to get over this hatred of the president. It's not doing you or your party any good. You lost the election in 2000...it is time to move on. Please, for your own good, give up this notion that anyone who disagrees with your political philosophies is stupid. By doing so, you only put yourself at a disadvantage. This is not a new tactic from your side of the aisle, it has been happening for over 50 years. And today, you can see exactly where it gets you. You've been losing power in the government for the last 12 years. For the record, Congress did in fact vote to give the president the power to go to war, so whoever you voted for spoke for you, and in essence, you voted for the war. The Geneva Conventions did not outlaw bombing of civilians because of our raids on Germany. Try not to forget the original Blitzkreig that the Germans conducted on their enemies long before the U.S. joined the fight. So before you start teaching lessons, try to overcome the hate that blinds you of the facts.

School is now in session, son!

Thank you, AnthonyB, for saving me the trouble of proving you wrong. Allow me to show you what I mean so that in the future you may avoid embarrassing yourself in a public forum by doing your homework ahead of time. Firstly, as stated in my last post, by condoning war in your present state of acceptance you are also condoning what you say are inevitable war crimes. You say that, "When we decide to take the path of war, it is only as a final means to an end. War is total destruction and chaos by it's very definition." The error in your first sentence is that "we" did not decide to go to war. Bush decided to go to war and as he was never actually elected by the people, the term "we" to represent both you and I or the majority of Americans is inaccurate. Your sentence after that defines war as total destruction and chaos. See here for an actual definition of war where you will find neither "total destruction" or "chaos." You go on to say, "If we bombed civilians and destroyed their infrastructure and starved them would that then be acceptable if we were able to eliminate all war crimes? " Herein you fail to make a solid argument as the international community outlawed the bombing of civilians years ago as a direct response to the deliberate mass bombing of civilians in the sceond world war. It first tried to do so in the fourth Geneva convention of 1949, but the UK and the US would not agree, since to do so would have been an admission of guilt for their systematic "area bombing" of German and Japanese civilians. In 1977 a protocol was added to that convention at last outlawing civilian bombing, and the UK signed it. The US still has not done so, but because enough nations are signatories the protocol is now part of customary international law, putting the US out on a limb. So to answer your question, No, that would not be acceptable since bombing civilians is in fact a war crime. Moving on, you say, "War is what it is and that can not be changed." Maybe you just need to be a little more specific here, but any introductory level studies in the History of Warfare will show you very quickly that war evolves just as does life itself. Then again, your definition of War in general is at least slightly, I suspect grossly, warped. From here you degenerate so rapidly and without direction that one might think you are perhaps ill and heavily under the influence of too much cough syrup or simply drunk. As you laud the president's supposed vision, tact, and courage, you begin to replace Truth with talk of being the "big dog" and having other nations "fear" us. "Close enough to smell us"? - That's just creepy. Economics come up out of left field and you run them far out of bounds into the side stands. Bush's plan will keep gas below the $10 a gallon we'd pay if Iran were controlling the region? Does this imply that we should take over the region and control the oil? Now open your mouth and insert your foot, son, because you've just hinted at a blood-for-oil plot. Tsk-tsk. If George "idiot-child" Bush had any interest in our economy, he wouldn't have bankrupted the nation taking the military that Clinton built on a wild goose chase after the red-herring known as WMDs. Instead, he could have appointed a Secretary of the Future and began to work on some alternative energy sources or total energy interdependence and solid defense against terrorists. Alas, you see, he has not that gift of vision. I'd now like to give Senator Barack Obama the floor for a moment. Senator... "George Bush...needs to defend his vision of government—and that's a government that can't, won't, and shouldn't solve great national challenges like our energy dependence. You see, it's this timidity—this smallness—in our politics that's holding us back right now. The idea that some problems are just too big to handle, and if you just ignore them, sooner or later, they'll go away. In the middle of the Cold War, we built a national highway system so we had a quick way to transport military equipment across the country. When we wanted to beat the Russians into space, we poured millions into a national education initiative that graduated thousands of new scientists and engineers. If we hope to strengthen our security and create hundreds of thousands of new jobs, we can offer no less of a commitment to energy independence. This is our chance to step up and serve. For decades, we have heard President after President call for energy independence in this country, but for decades, we have fallen short. Well it's time to call on ourselves. We shouldn't wait for the next time gas hits $3 a gallon—and we shouldn't accept any more headlines that talk about a dying auto industry or a terrorist plot to use oil as a weapon against America. We should act—and we should act now." Ahem, thank you Senator Obama. Now for another taste of what real vision is like, please see Sir Branson, head of the Virgin Group, here. Hot damn! Now we're talking! In closing, I will comment on your remark about Bush keeping "citizens comfortable enough, even to object to all our policies that actualy are the very policies which allow us to sit back in peace and quote old German philosophers in the first place." I'll have you know that I am perfectly comfortable - perhaps in my element even - quoting old german philosophers from the back of a tank on the battlefield with a grenade launcher in one hand, a bottle of wild turkey in the other, with blood, gore, guts, and veins in my teeth! Lucky for you, you'll never see that because this is "their" war, not mine.

This war is most definitly necessary/ nobody is condoning abuse

Nobody i know is condoning war crimes. When we decide to take the path of war, it is only as a final means to an end. War is total destruction and chaos by it's very definition. Just because we have sanitized it makes it no less horrible. If we bombed civilians and destroyed their infrastructure and starved them would that then be acceptable if we were able to eliminate all war crimes? Thats like saying I murdered a man but at least I did'nt muss up his hair! War is what it is and that can not be changed. We should fear the very fact of going to war. When it's decided that there is no alternative we can only hope for a quick and decisive victory. President Bush has the vision to know we are fighting the defining struggle of the 21st century. This war is most definitly needed. We did'nt ask for people to hate with their warped logic or to attack us. Listen to the President of Iran speak and tell me there is no need to be right in his back yard where he can see the big dog and fear him. We are close enough for him to smell us. The Presidents strategy was to be center square and to take it from there. We are not going anywhere for at least 50 years, as in N. Korea. That should keep people safe as they've been since 9/11. It should keep gas prices well below the 10 dollars a gallon we'd have to pay with Iran controlling the region. And they say George Bush is weak on the economy ? And most importantly it should keep our citizens comfortable enough, even to object to all our policies that actualy are the very policies which allow us to sit back in peace and quote old German philosophers in the first place.
