Zelaya's Latest Attempt to Return to Honduras: CBS

The title of a recently released CBS News article is "Efforts to Reinstate Honduran Leader Fail". The sub-title is "Exiled President Manuel Zelaya Says Coup Leaders Are "Totally Refusing My Reinstatement". "Fail and "Totally Refuisng" carry obvious negative connotations. There is a sense of exasperation< strong>.

The first sentence in this report is "Talks on resolving the Honduran political crisis headed toward FAILURE Wednesday when the interim government indicated (that) it would REJECT a mediator's final proposal for returning ousted President Manuel Zelaya to power". "failure" and "reject" are pretty strong negative words.

Zelaya himself said that " They are TOTALLY REFUSING my reinstatement. By REFUSING to sign, (the talks) HAVE FAILED". "totally refusing", "refusing" and "have failed" again are strongly negative. Zelaya is clearly exasperated.

According to Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, one of the mediators, "The clock is ticking fast AND IT IS TICKING AGAINST THE HONDURAN PEOPLE. I warn you that this plan is not perfect. NOTHING IN DEMOCRACY IS PERFECT". A dictatorship is even more unpopular.

According to Carlos Lopez, Micheletti's foreign minister, "A proposal of that nature is inconceivable (and) unacceptable". According to CBS, he "FLATLY REJECTED returning Zelaya to the presidency, saying (that) the executive branch cannot overturn a Supreme Court resolution forbidding the return of the ousted leader", but in the eyes of Micheletti's supporters, it's perfectly acceptable that Micheletti took power in a coup.

According to Rixi Moncada, of Zelaya'[s delegation, "The
mediation only has one goal: TO ENFORCE THE MANDATE OF THE OAS AND
RESTORE THE CONSTITUTIONAL ORDER IN HONDURAS WITH THE RETURN OF
PRESIDENT MANUEL ZELAYA
. That is why, FOR US, the Accord of San Jose has failed". It's impossible to decide who is more reasonable here. Both sides are equally UNreasonable.

According to CBS, "Zelaya
angered many people in Honduras BY IGNORING CONGRESS AND THE COURTS'
EFFORT TO HOLD A REFERENDUM ON CHANGING THE CONSTITUTION which many saw
AS AN EFFORT TO ABOLISH TERM LIMITS and impose a socialist government
in the style of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez
" which is not a good thing.

According to 80-year-old Florencio Mejia, a retired gardener, " They wanted to impose COMMUNISM on us and we don't want to be Communists". So Mejia supports Zelaya.

According to Julia Garcia, a dentist, "We prefer six months of isolation to losing our liberty". Garcia supports Micheletti but
what she doesn't realize is the fact that socialists/Communists only
make a very nice sales pitch Once they are in power these people become
dictators
.

According to Alba Galindo, a Zelaya supporter, "THESE PEOPLE HAVE ALL BEEN PAID TO MARCH and their bosses would fire them if they didn't come". Galindo is suggesting that corruption is involved.

Finally, according to Deputy State Department spokesman Robert Wood, "The secretary of state made very clear that Mr. Micheletti, the de facto regime, needs to take this effort seriously and respond appropriately. SHOULD THAT NOT HAPPEN, THERE ARE CLEAR CONSEQUENCES WITH REGARD TO OUR ASSISTANCE TO HONDURAS", which would be devastating for a country which is arguably the poorest country in the Americas, but the million-dollar question is: does the Micheletti regime care and are they will willing to give in/concede?

This crisis simply isn't going away.
