Zen Computer: A new way to look at your computer
In the book, Zen Computer by Philip Toshio Sudo, the author shows a new and interesting way to work with a computer. Computers have always been frustrating machines because of a lack of knowledge and patience. This book teaches how to deal with not only the functions of the machine, but also the stress.
In Chapter five, titled Install, the seven rules of Zen computers are discussed. The first rule is very important, not only when using computers but for life as well. Rule one states to always expect the unexpected. This is a great rule because it means to take nothing for granted and also to expect nothing. During my senior year of high school I had a very important paper due the next day of school. Being a procrastinator I did not start it until the night before. The ten page paper was almost complete when my computer froze. I had saved some of my work, but not all of it. I had to restart my computer and start over. Had I been prepared I would have saved my work after every page. This rule to me means to expect computer crashes and other things of that sort but not to fear them; to just be prepared.
The third rule of Zen computer in chapter five is to not waste time. This rule applies in life as well as computers. A large problem with taking computer classes is the possibility of distraction. Computers can do anything. You can play games, talk with friends, read the newspaper and much more. I find that time that should be spent doing homework is often spent checking email or playing games. I often feel I have wasted so much time in front of the computer screen. This rule focuses on staying on track but also on allowing yourself freedom to do whatever you want with your time.
The last rule of Zen computer is the most important. The seventh rule states that one needs to know when to turn off the computer and to get a life. Today’s culture so often revolves around the computer. We can now interact with friends and family on a new level, play games, and shop online. It seems there is no need to leave the computer. This rule reminds that human nature relies on human interaction to survive. We are born with a need to interact with others on a physical, intimate and social level. My sister has recently become obsessed with the new craze of Myspace. If it were up to her she would sit in front of the computer all day. Since reading this chapter I have attempted to change her computer habits. I have set time limits and I force her to interact with the family again. These rules have all been incredibly helpful tools for my life and my family’s.
A main concept in this book is living life in a natural and balanced way. This book teaches to find the natural rhythm in life and to live by it. This, it states, is true Zen. I find this idea interesting and appealing. So much of our lives are run by other people and the ever constant ticking clock. Time always seems to be ticking away. However, this book says to just live your life and relax. The focus is on life and living rather than stress and anger. I have really enjoyed this book so far. It has some really great, real-life concepts and rules that make complete sense. This is an amazing book that I look forward to reading.
