Upendra Rao aka Upendra is an Indian film actor, politician, and filmmaker who was born on 18 September 1968 in Koteshwara, Kundapur, Udupi District, Karnataka, India. He is basically famous for his work in Kannada cinema. He is also famous by the name “Uppi“. He is currently one of the highest-paid directors and actors in the Kannada cinema. He was born to Manjunatha Rao and Anusuya. He was the second son to his parents, his older brother being Sudheendra Rao. Rao’s family was poor. He obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree from APS College of Commerce, Bangalore. During his time at the college, he participated in plays often forming troupes with his friends. Upendra started his film career as a writer and assistant director under film director and actor Kashinath. His first directorial venture was Tharle Nan Maga (1992). In the mid-1990s, Upendra directed Om (1995), which portrayed actual Bangalore gangsters, followed by A (1998), which was his debut movie as an actor. His next movie, starring Raveena Tandon, a Bollywood actress. After a decade of acting in Kannada, Telugu and Tamil movies, he returned to the role of director with the multilingual movie Super (2010), which was well-received critically and commercially.

He is well known for his work in many movies like A (1998), Upendra (1999), S/O Satyamurthy (2015), Uppi 2 (2015), Hollywood (2002), Super Star (2002), Kalpana (2012), Super (2010), Raktha Kanneeru (2003) and soon. He has thus established himself as one of the most successful actors and directors of Kannada cinema. He is currently one of the highest paid directors and actors in the Kannada cinema.

Upendra is known for his thematic representation of Indian politics and society in movies directed by him. In October 2017, he joined a political party called Karnataka Pragnyavanta Janata Paksha. However, owing to internal differences he quit the party five months later promising to form another party based on the principles of Prajakiya (citizen-centric administration). He finally started a political party called “Prajakeeya” – which represents the workers and the political party is planning to focus on education, health, and transparency in governance.
