Thalapathi is an Indian Tamil film written and directed by Mani Ratnam and produced by G.Venkateswaran under the banner of G.V.Films. It was released on November 5, 1991, and stars Rajinikanth, Mammootty, Arvind Swamy, Jaishankar, Amrish Puri, Srividya, Bhanupriya, Shobana, Geetha. The plot revolves around Padayappa, a mechanical engineer whose father gives up his property to his foster brother and then dies of shock soon after. It is an official remake of the Mohanlal starrer Malayalam film Thenmavin Kombath (1994).
