Stars: Charuprakash Ghosh, Rabi Ghosh, Somen Bose, Satya Bandopadhyay, Haridhan Mukherjee, Satindra Bhattacharya, Santosh Dutta, Geetali Roy, Renuka Ray

Mahapurush or The Holy Man is a black comedy of sorts that focuses on corrupt godmen who con people and make money in the name of religion. The director points out that the coward (kapurush) and the genius (mahapurush) can exist within the same person. The performance by all the actors was good. Mahapurush O Kapurush tickles with quite a few chucklesome situations.

The first half was more entertaining and comical than the second. The storyline is predictable. The story is quite simple, a love triangle, beneath the surface a complex range of emotions are felt. The movie has a rich script carried off with much aplomb and relish by its cast. It is definitely once a watch and will certainly make you go back and revisit Ray. The story thereafter is a roller-coaster ride, somewhat similar to what we have seen in the cult film.

Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne is a delightful, fun film for children of all ages. After all,  a movie with magic, beautiful songs, the antics of Goopy and Bagha, the dance of fat ghosts, and memorably funny evil characters just could not go wrong.

Goopi and Bagha are two characters who meet in a jungle being banished by the King of their village. They by chance meet the King of Ghosts and he gives them three boons for their simplicity and innocence. The rest of the story revolves around how they use those boons for the betterment of the Shundi Kingdom. Even though this is mostly touted as a children’s film, it, without doubt, features in every adult’s favorite list. The first movie in the Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne series was made by Satyajit Ray, which became the longest-running movie in the history of Bengal, running for 51 straight weeks! 2. Galpa Holeo Satyi (1966)

bengali old comedy movie list
source: wikipedia.org

Director: Tapan Sinha

Writer: Tapan Sinha

Stars: Bhanu Bandopadhyay, Jogesh Chatterjee, Rabi Ghosh, Chaya Devi, Ajoy Ganguli, Bankim Ghosh, Bharati Devi

Tapan Sinha used to be considered a legendary storyteller after Satyajit Ray in the 50s and 60s. His films were related to the classic literature of giant novelists. His casting was flawless. He chose actors and actresses who suited the respective role and he was an inspiration for all the directors of India. All the actors and actresses of the film performed to their limit. Tapan Sinha’s script and camera work were brilliant. Hrishikesh Mukherjee made the Hindi version of the film with the title Bawarchi. Although the film where Rajesh Khanna converted it into a romantic film got box-office success, the film reached nowhere near Golpo Holeo Satti in story-telling, acting performance, and intellectual treatment.

It is one of the best Bengali old comedy movies which you should not miss at any cost. The truth is, this Tapan Sinha classic is a mind-blowing classic. A non-convoluted drama with a special message. And I give it to the director for roping in such fabulous actors who make this film seem a slice from everyday life. You will never feel that they are playacting. Superlative natural performances, setting, costumes, dialogues, and situations make this film so close to reality. Incidents that take place in this particular house shown in the film could have happened in my house, or in your house in the 60s.  It is in black and white, a tint that makes old films even more enjoyable. Let’s watch this movie for free- Galpo Holeo Satyi.
